Making a Bad Day Good

samiarinet

Sarabeth and I started this new tradition. I wish we had thought of it years ago.

Like most everyone else in the world, Mondays are a huge upset to the Toy family. Mondays are like a knife that punctures the weekend and severs us from the sweet time we’ve been able to spend together the previous two days.

And it’s off to work we go.

Coming home from our vacation several weeks back, we were dreading the first Monday that would kick off the work week we had planned so long to escape from. Something needed to happen here.

I couldn’t just sit by and let the laws of time govern and dictate our attitudes and rob us of our happiness. Time had already spent the last nine days conspiring against us to dump us back into the mundane routine of life.

So I said to Sarabeth, “We need a pick-me-up. Let’s go to Starbucks.”

It’s not our custom to go out together in the mornings, but we did it, and it was so much fun! We were the only two people with smiles on our faces that Monday morning – she with her tall coffee with cream and sugar, me with my double-chocolatey chip frappucino, and a cheddar, egg, sausage sandwich split between us.

And I said to her, “Let’s make this a tradition. Every Monday we’ll start the week off together going to Starbucks.”

And since then, Monday’s haven’t been so terrible.

Let’s hear your thoughts, readers. What’s the worst day of the week for you? What are you going to do to make it a day you can actually look forward to? Share your ideas and encourage others to turn their worst day into their best day.

  1. 🙂 Love this. We have a similar tradition, we make Mondays a mandatory “date night”… the stipulation being that we consider any time we are out and holding hands a date. This way a trip to the grocery store or library or bank can be a happy and romantic date. Its silly, but it helps!

  2. I don’t have many bad days on the way in – I simply don’t dwell on the coming day, be it a Monday or a Thursday. Either way, I don’t dislike Monday any more than I do Thursday, but I can say this: Friday, Saturday and Sunday are a lot more fun (I usually work from home on Friday). Great post though.

    1. I’m the same way, bgddrjim. In fact, I rather like Mondays. I follow my mom’s lead and do the laundry that day. I’m busy, but because of the washer and dryer, I have time to do things I like to do, like reading, while something is being done (the laundry) to better my life. I do like the idea of of having something fun to do that is in my schedule though, maybe an in-house movie night.

  3. That is probably the greatest idea I’ve ever heard! Luckily I haven’t had to deal with the Monday blues since April (off work for a while), but maybe I should start a Monday morning routine when I get back to work!

  4. Great idea! Instead of getting coffee (he starts work very early, I work from home), we have a special Monday night dinner and catch up on whatever shows we’ve missed. We both really look forward to it and it still sets the tone for the week, I find.

  5. I don’t really have a “bad day” of the week because of my job (wedding/portrait photographer). Some Mondays are like my Saturdays! My bad days are more random….the days I don’t book anything….or I get bad news…or just get really lonely (working from home can be REALLY hard!)

How do I overcome it? First, I make another cup of coffee…no matter what time it is, there’s something special about having a hot cup of coffee. (I really should start doing decaf at night…)
But the main thing I do is remember how God has carried me through similar circumstances in the past. When money is tight, I remember the times we were able to pay the bills down to the penny. When the bookings aren’t there, I remember how God has challenged me to grow in humility (instead of getting more bookings) in the past, and how I was a better person for it.

Lastly, I hide the “I hate Mondays” people from my newsfeed on Facebook. 🙂 Cutting out the negativity is a BIG game changer.

    Great post!!!

  6. I used to work at a Court. While I enjoyed the job, it was really stressful. To keep up morale several of my colleagues and I decided that on hump-day Wednesdays we’d enjoy lunch together at the local sushi bar and order at a table. It was all very civilized and the staff got to know us so we were always greeted by smiles. If I was having a particularly bad day I sometimes had a glass of wine with my lunch or deep-fried banana and green-tea ice-cream. I can tell you it sure made our Wednesday afternoons easier to handle 🙂

  7. I absolutely love that idea and might just have to steal it. For me, that joy robbing day still seems to be Monday, even though our lives revolve around busy Sundays.

  8. I love this idea! Mondays are toughest for me because of work travel for my husband and a workday at home for me. While he and I can’t start a coffee date like you and your wife, maybe we can figure out another tradition to make Mondays more fun. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. Someone else gave the idea about having a date night on Mondays – the store, out to eat, a walk, etc. I thought that was pretty brilliant.

  9. Great idea!! Monday nights are our only nights without kid activities, and I treasure and protect that. Makes me look forward to Mondays, especially when there’s Monday Night Football.

  10. I start off my Monday’s listening to great music in my player as I stroll off to work.. leaving a bit early so I can take it a bit slower.. always gets me in a good mood and sets the mood for the whole day!! 🙂

  11. In my opinion, if a person loves what he does (studying or working), he’ll be looking forward for another day to do it. If there are family and friends that he’d want to see, he will always be excited to spend time with them. So I guess it’s not a question of what day it is, but whether or not we have a purpose other than to breathe and eat. We should all have a reason for living, that’s the only way to make all “bad” days good. 🙂

  12. And you’re just NOW figuring out that Starbucks is the secret to a good Monday?! LOL 😉 But bravo to you! I think it would be great if we all thought of ways to be HAPPY instead of just letting “life” and it’s weekly unpleasantness consume us. When I start off the day with positive thinking, (or, even better, thanking God for the day even before it has happened!) the rest of it doesn’t rattle me so much.

  13. I try to keep my life in perspective. Rahter than moan and groan about getting up at 4:45 a.m. on Monday, I find gratitude in the fact that I have a job/career that I enjoy. I remember the high unemployment rates, home foreclosures, and sickness that affect many. I look around at my beautiful home, fabulous friends, and good health and thank God for waking me up. By the way, Thank you for visiting and following my blog. Great post!

  14. I not only “like” this…I “love” it! What a great idea! I really like that the two of worked together to purposefully make the decision to start the week on a positive note! It can be a difficult thing to do some days, but it really is worth it.
Thank you so much for joining me on my journey! I consider it an honor to have you follow along, and I’m looking forward to hearing/reading more of your adventures!
Blessings to you and your wife! Hope your morning started off great!
